I'm a new teacher, my passion is to teach to cancer patients and survivors.  My hope is to learn everything I can about effective methods to support those who are open to yoga treatment.  Question - What is the first step to gaining contacts in a community to provide this support?

Hi Geanette,
You are in a great location to take some advanced training in yoga designed for cancer patients. Jnani Chapman is in SF and offers programs and Ingrid Yang in San Diego. Many hospitals now offer yoga classes for patients, and can be a place to learn and to assist a teacher. Styles of yoga vary widely and each has a different emphasis. What is your original yoga training emphasis and what do you envision your main focus for a class to be? For me, my main focus is on relaxation, so breathing explorations and meditation are my main focus, gentle stretching is also practiced, but modified for each person. Hopefully, others will answer you and you will have a range of ideas! Blessings, Jean
Hi Geanette!

I too am a new teacher, and I just started teaching gentle chair yoga for cancer patients, survivors and their families/caregivers at a hospital nearby. The classes are offered at the hospital but through Team Survior; they are a national organization with chapters all over. Below i will put a link to their website. I'm sure they have a chapter in or near your area.

Dear Ana,
How wonderful that you are able to offer yoga not only to survivors, but family. In my class, many times a loved one will join us, and it's great to be able to offer a space that is for both to renew and relax. Do you find that the hospital setting allows for participants to come regularly?
Namaste,
Jean
Wow, you ladies are a wonderful resource. My focus is gentle care, attention to breath work, meditation and restorative posture. In my reading I've found that there are some cases where a patient may enjoy a more active practice. Have either of you experienced that? I'm going to check out the web site Ana! Jean...I will look up the two instructors you mentioned. Ironically I am now in a relationship with a lovely gentleman from San Diego, therefore I tend to bounce between northern and southern California. Where are you teaching now?

Thanks again! I will keep you posted on the progress...

Namaste!
XOXO
