I'm a yoga teacher, wife, and mom. I practice yoga most days, because not practicing is worse than taking a day off. I'm a lackadaisical vegetarian, but committed to feeling guilty about my dietary inconsistencies. And my big resolution for the year: I finally decided to stop dying my hair blond, because who really cares anyway?

Yoga Props: What Are These Things For??

The landscape of a yoga studio varies from school to school. Some places are very sparsely furnished, others are richly ornamented with plants, artwork... and props! Don't be alarmed, they aren't torture devices (usually!). Like toys for adults, these props offer the opportunity to deepen, support and enliven your practice. Picking Your Way Through the Yoga Buffet.

So you've heard about the benefits of yoga, you have that cute pair of Lululemon pants you want to show off, and you've got a few hours a week to spare. Not to worry, we'll help you get it sorted.

First of all: there is no one size fits… Continue

Hands-on Adjustments

I remember the first time I got adjusted in yoga class: firm hands pressing my pelvis up and back in Down Dog (Ado Mukha Svanasana). It was a revelation to me. As in, "oh this is what she means by 'elongate the spine towards the upper back corner of the room.'" Call it a mental block, but I just wasn't ready to hear it, though I was prepared to feel it.

Our culture is not a touchy-feely one. We value our personal space. And in a place like New York City, where I live, we spend so much… Continue

Sanskrit: it's all Greek to me. At least, it was.

When I started doing yoga, to the tune of Rodney Yee videos (yes, VHS! this was a while ago...) I largely ignored the occasional sprinkling of Sanskrit terminology. Mostly, Yee used English translations of the asanas (poses). But as I started to get more involved with yoga, I realized that I had to start talking the talk.

Good teachers don't use Sanskrit names to confuse or impress. They use it because it is the language of yoga, in the way that French is the language of ballet. While… Continue
