Cancer Survivor, Yoga Instructor
Tell us about yourself
I am a 9-year breast cancer survivor, first, and a yogini. Having started yoga at age 50, I consider myself an example that it is never too late to start change.

During my cancer treatments and surgeries, I began to think about how few options there were and teachers that understood what life-long physical restrictions and emotional challenges a survivor encounters. Through yoga, I personally found not only a way to reduce pain, strengthen my immune system, feel younger and stay healthy, but also emotional guidance thru cancer recovery and survivorship making life's daily challenges a little easier. Wanting to bring this experience and understanding to others, I created a yoga program that includes weekly classes, 3-day retreats and certification process for yoga teachers working with cancer survivors over the past 8 years.

My first published abstract entitled, One-Size-Does-not-Fit-All: Teaching teachers how to teach yoga to cancer survivors, was presented at SYTAR Conference, 2007. I am a frequent presenter at Yoga Journal Conferences.

Current Projects: A Manuel for yoga teachers of cancer survivors and BLOG on topics of help and interest to yoga teachers of cancer survivors

Current Positions:
Yoga Program Director for The Libby Ross Foundation
Principal Teacher of Yoga for Women Cancer Survivors Program at OM Yoga, NYC
Director and Principle Teacher of the Woman Cancer Survivor Teacher Training at OM Yoga, NYC,

Current Teaching Positions:
OM Yoga, NYC, Sangha Shala Yoga; Williamsburg, NY, Topnotch Resort and Spa, Stowe VT

tari, as you might know i attended your om training several years ago. i have been teaching a class for breast cancer survivors but now i am inviting other survivors into the class due to the fact that we live on an island and there is no other class available. at the time of my training you did not have a manual and sequencing was limited. has that changed? i feel as though i would like more training to care for the new types of cancer i am encountering. any guidance you could offer would be great. do you offer a level two training or would this upcoming one be good for me?

also, one of my students has a sister undergoing treatment for lymphoma in traverse city, michigan. do you know of anyone teaching a class there?

looking forward to hearing from you

tari, just wanted to say hi and thank you for the training i recieved in 2007/08?i am really excited about the manual as there simply isn't enough out there for yoga teachers to design classes for this population, unless we fly all over the country to attend workshops which is time and cost prohibitive.. i read your article yoga by the numbers and new norm once in a while when i need to connect with your down to earth wisdom. thank you for lighting my path. alicia

How I'd love to attend your training for yoga teachers of cancer patients. Sounds amazing. I'm voluntering to teach yoga to child cancer patients at a local Children's hospital. They are so brave.

Hi! I was hoping to attend your training at OM the first week in October, but i wont be able to come unfortunately....i was trained by Sarah Trelease a couple of years ago and have been teaching since then. I was wondering if you two were planning to do a training in San Francisco in the future? Thanks and welcome to the YogaBear family :)
