On November 7th Priya Ma will be presenting at the International Yoga Therapy Conference One Day Event in Corte Madera, CA, at the Bay Club Marin (220 Town Center). This past week, my husband and I traveled to New Jersey to see family and commune with fall trees. Traveling can be stressful, even good stress sends some riffs of emotions that shift me out of balance; not to mention the three hour time zone change. I find that compassionate meditation the most helpful. To me, that means, allowing myself to be present with the changes and mindful of my breathing. At night, using a simple focus on my breath to end the day is sometimes the best and only thing I…

Much of what is presented about Yoga in our society represents the fitness-oriented media image of this ancient practice. What is less well known to the public is the idea of Yoga as a complementary component of an overall health care regimen. When practiced with a specific therapeutic intention - Yoga Therapy - it can help prevent and aid in the recovery from a variety of mental and physical ailments.
On November 7, 2009, Marin County will be…

There's a time when we can only think about ourselves and our own recoveries, and then, we want to reach out and help others. If you have a few minutes to sign on to
advocacy petitions, they do impact our lawmakers. In March, I was able to lobby with C3(Colon Cancer Coalition) and learned how to condense my cancer experience into a ten minute story that advocated for laws to be…

Here's a little secret, dear yogis and yoginis: I've been seriously slacking on my yoga practice these days. Lots of things have come into play: work is really busy these days, my knee is injured, I'm tired, it's cold out, I'd rather go home and eat Annie's Mac & Cheese while watching "Project Runway." I just can't muster up the energy to practice. What I struggle with is this: is my body telling me it's time to rest, or am I relying on excuses to keep me from what yoga is all about - the…

As the summer flew by, so is the fall. Trying to soak up the last bit of decent weather in New England I have turned to long walks with my pug, Gwen, down the streets of Cambridge. Just loosing my other pug, Tucker to cancer I wanted to let Gwen know she was not alone and that I too miss Tucker. We find ourselves on the quiet back roads where the sidewalks are brick, the houses are quaint, and the traffic is light. The crunching of the multicolored leaves under my sneakers acts as a buffer to…

I woke this morning with a stabbing pain in my neck. It took me awhile to fully open my eyes since crying myself to sleep left them swollen. I realized the pain was from the corner of the photo album I fell asleep on. Not having been on my yoga mat in a little over a week, today I vowed to return. I willed myself out of bed and placed the album back on the night stand, started the kettle on the stove and opened my laptop to check my mail. I brace myself for the condolences I was about to…

Thinking that our lives are fine the way that they are is a common misconception. When you take the time to step back from your life to get a larger view you may realize you could use some change. But how do we make this transition with grace as we flow from who we are now to who we want to be without disrupting our lives completely I find on my mat is the best place to research this question however there comes a time where you have to carry your yoga mind off the mat in search of this…

Last week I was all excited because my NYC buddy
Jay-Z was talking to the press about his desire to take up yoga. This week we've got more A-listers who are embracing the asana practice, and I couldn't be more excited. Basketball legend
Shaquille O'Neal showed up at a class in his Cleveland neighborhood recently, and is now taking to the practice as part of his…

Wearing a loose, red-checked, button-down dress, I arrived early for my first chemotherapy infusion. I would wear my red dress almost every week for 26 weeks, because it was one less decision to make. It became my uniform. But the first day, it was a red banner to help me hide my fear. The
waiting room exacerbated my restlessness, as I tried to figure out who was there for treatment and…

I just arrived back home in Brooklyn, and blasted
Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind" on repeat the entire drive. It's a bit of an anthem here in the Big Apple - the song celebrates our fair city and everything special about it. So I was pleasantly surprised to come across this recent interview with the hip-hop mogul, in which he reveals that he's eager to get on a yoga mat. Apparently his pal, Coldplay lead singer
Chris Martin (aka Mr.
Gwyneth Paltrow) has turned him on to the…

In July 2002, Austin resident Leibel Harelik was diagnosed with prostate cancer and told he had six months to live.
Armed with advice from lung cancer survivor Richard Bloch, co-founder of the tax preparation service H&R Block, Harelik sought out other medical opinions, had surgery and underwent radiation and hormone treatments that have helped him…

It is important to remember that yoga, as we know it today, with such emphasis on Asana, on poses, is relatively a new phenomenon.
Yoga Asana as it has been practiced for thousands of years is mostly about taking a seat in…
