I participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on November 6, 2009. I initially registered to walk the mile at my own pace. (Doctor's advice) It was held in Austin, Texas at the Domain. This was awesome. I met up with so many people who were survivors or had lost a loved one to Cancer. The whole experience was exhilarating. So much excitement.
Well, when it came time to participate in the run or walk, I thought I was getting in the right line. Instead, I got into the line for the 3…

Hello Yogis,
Happy Day-After-Thanksgiving!
A friend recently shared with us the Hindi word jugaad. It literally means a work around solution, devised due to lack of resources. In other words, it means
getting more done with less. That's what we do at Yoga Bear. We are grassroots and operate on a tiny budget--- but the dedication and hard work of our volunteers and partner yoga studios make it possible to serve the cancer community in big ways. This resourceful…

Perhaps the smell of family recipes, and the expectation of seeing old friends has begun displace some of my holiday anxiety, whatever it is, I feel deep gratitude today. Just putting on a pot of
lentil soup timed to be ready when our daughter flies in to join us for the festive week is making my heart smile with gratitude! A decade ago I adopted the morning ritual of writing down…

Writing is a way for me to
process emotions, especially during cancer. Reflecting back on some
feelings is common during 'markers' dates: the day of diagnosis, a surgery date, and the last
chemotherapy. Just passing my fifth date, marking the end of chemo had me looking through my folders. It brought back a quesy
feeling as I sought to find balance. The…

Rooting into the earth is an
essential yoga teaching. During cancer treatment, we can use this natural wisdom by allowing ourselves some time with plants, trees and animals. Spending many afternoons on a lounge chair overlooking my backyard, the sounds and smells of nature soothed my busy mind and focused my attention on the here and now. A small "…

Much of what is presented about Yoga in our society represents the fitness-oriented media image of this ancient practice. What is less well known to the public is the idea of Yoga as a complementary component of an overall health care regimen. When practiced with a specific therapeutic intention - Yoga Therapy - it can help prevent and aid in the recovery from a variety of mental and physical ailments.
This Saturday November 7, 2009, Marin County will be the epicenter for the…

Last night I was reading
The Wisdom of No Escape by Pema Chodron, this month’s book topic for the
Namaste Book Club, and I came to Chapter #6 Joy. The principle point of the chapter is that sometimes we “subtly forget about joy” and instead bask in our misery of day to day living. Instead we were encouraged to recognize the joy.
“That sense of wonder and delight is…

Knowing how and what to say to our then sixteen year old daughter about my stage III cancer was difficult. I searched for support groups, but there were none in our area. Parents are supposed to be indestructible. Cancer takes this illusion away, sometimes too soon, and sometimes on the brink of independence, especially for a teenager. Our daughter, Jesse Marie, was obsessed that we were telling her the 'whole truth'. She still insists that I report any health concerns to her because she wants…
