What Mice Tell Us About Stimulating the Mind

De we ever really lose our memories?

That's what a research team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology wanted to know. And so to begin, they genetically engineered some mice to develop Alzheimer's disease-like symptoms. The mice quickly forgot what had taken them several weeks to learn (one task was navigating a water maze).

The next phase involved sensory stimulation. Would it make a

difference in memory retrieval? To find… Continue

This article is from Kelly McGonigal's blog, Open Mind Open Body.

A Practice for Change in the New Year

It’s time for New Year’s Resolutions – those passionate, determined, optimistic, and sometimes desperate pledges we make to change ourselves. How do we get from where we are to where we want to be, without giving up in frustration? Consider skipping the resolutions this year. In… Continue

Re-charging yourself to think POSITVE:)

the following quote was sent to me by a great friend and mentor:

"Here's a great technique that originated with Matt Oechsli, a therapeutic hypnotist: First, identify the thought that is bothering you. Most likely, it is a fear of something. Is it failure? Rejection? Incompetence? Could it be illness or catastrophe? Secondly, interrupt it by visualizing a candle flame and taking a long, deep breath. You can't think two opposing thoughts at the same time, so you'll find your fear… Continue

Finding Inspiration

The word inspiration literally means to be 'of spirit'. For me, it is a reminder that forces beyond my understanding are at work in life. When a new challenge or decision is facing me, I look to this force for inspiration to help me move forward. Often, I read quotes and reflect on their wisdom. I carry slips of paper with quotes that point out a direction to which I aspire to follow. My computer serves as a source… Continue

A Yoga Mat

Yoga mat preference can be as personal as a thumbprint. When we attend our first class, many studios either rent the mats for a nominal fee or have them available for use. But one day, we decide to buy our own mat! We are becoming yogis! Mats can be thin and fairly inexpensive or… Continue

insurance caps

We have a friend who was diagnosed with colon cancer last year. We are concerned that her Health Insurance may expire. We are wondering if it would even be possible to get some sort of supplement, even perhaps International Health Insurance, at this point. We are not sure, however, if she would qualify for any of these.

For those… Continue

Growing Wise

When I sat down to write this blog I first went to check my e-mail. Seeing someone had responded to me through my blogs I was curious as to what I would find. When I opened the letter I was surprised to realize, I knew who it was. Ana my best friend from 8 years ago had found me and wanted to connect.

After finding out it was Ana I stopped reading, I wanted to reach back into my memory bank and revisit our time together before her words would draw me back to the present moment. I saw… Continue

Yoga a New Beginning

Yesterday, a new student started in my Yoga for Cancer Survivors class. After a mastectomy and reconstruction, she tried another yoga class but her body was not ready.
