Yoga & Non-Greed

Aparigraha is the fifth yama and is defined as "greedlessness." How do we embrace and teach greedlessness is our culture of "stuff" and "more more more"-especially around the season of giving? I think this yama comes last in the list for good reason. As we bring non-harming, truth, non-stealing, and moderation into our lives greed begins to melt away. A sense of abundance and trust envelopes our every day and our perspective shifts. We need not fill our lives with all that "stuff"…

One in four hospitals offer complementary medicine. Does yours?

According to the American Hospital Association, one in four US hospitals now offers therapies in complementary and alternative medicine to address growing demand. In fact, all 18 hospitals on the U.S. News and World Report's "Best Hospitals" list provide some form of it.

The number of holistic providers and practitioners who offer these types of…

Moderation is Key.

Brahmacarya is perhaps one of the most misunderstood yamas. This fourth yama was completely perplexing to me during my 200 hour teacher training - the definition taught to us was "celibacy." Much to the dismay of my partner, I seriously thought that refraining from sex would help me attain a higher understanding of yoga. Well, that didn't last for too long and thankfully that then-boyfriend is now my husband!…

Looking for Cancer survivors/patients/doctors for new book on yoga and health

Greetings:

At the urging of Halle to join and interact with this community, I am co-authoring a new book with fellow journalist, Neil Gross, on the science of yoga and health benefits that are possibly gained by a regular yoga practice (postures, breathing techniques and/or meditation). The book takes a look at the burgeoning realm of scientific studies that are being done both in America and India, separating facts about yoga's benefits and claims from fiction. Within that,…

Yoga Yama - Asteya

Of course, none of us would ever consider directly stealing from another person or a retail store or anything like that! The third yama is asteya or "non-stealing." How do we apply this in our practice and/or when we teach? One thought that came to mind was avoiding stealing other's ideas as our own. This is interesting to me because I think knowledge is out there to share and… Continue

Question About Leg & Lower Back Pain After Yoga

I'm in recovery but still have stage four melanoma, no breast cancer now. But I had both and had a lot of time lying down. Then I started almost daily yoga classes when Yoga Bear gave me the opportunity and I think it is an amazing gift. I love the studio and the people where I go an I mostly enjoy restorative classes. I can not do flow or too many standing poses yet. I used to do them before I got sick. I'm 70 years old and soo grateful to be alive.

Lately though I go to a class…
