This just came across my desk. What a fantastic non-profit! A simple, yet very important idea.

Fighting cancer is difficult enough, but living with it is even tougher - and that's where the Cleaning for A Reason Foundation steps in. This nonprofit offers free professional housecleaning, and maid services to improve the lives of women undergoing treatment for cancer - any…

According to the American Hospital Association, one in four US hospitals now offers therapies in complementary and alternative medicine to address growing demand. In fact, all 18 hospitals on the U.S. News and World Report's "Best Hospitals" list provide some form of it.

I just love laughter yoga. Few things in life are as pleasing as a good laugh. There's just something about laughing that gets the endorphins pumping, and awakens the spirit. That's why I'm so delighted by our latest partner studio-- LaughterRx. They are offering FREE classes to cancer patients currently undergoing treatment.…

A group of volunteers recently put together an awesome cookbook of Flexitarian Recipes-- meaning they can be made WITH or WITHOUT meat. The idea is to be inclusive and respectful of the full dietary spectrum.
100% of the proceeds from this charity cookbook are being donated to Yoga Bear (50%) and Slow Food USA (50%).
You can buy the book on Amazon:

Anyone who has had surgery knows that the experience can generate feelings of fear and apprehension.
One tool for calming the mind is guided imagery. Guided imagery is the process of focusing the mind, accessing intuition, exploring emotions and deepening inner awareness. It is a simple, low-cost therapeutic tool that can help counteract feelings of fear and anxiety.
One study from the Cleveland Clinic took a group of…

Every year we see hundreds of products from tennis balls to shampoo, to golf clubs to cars, decorated with a little pink ribbon, signaling to consumers that a portion of the proceeds will benefit breast cancer awareness. However, this “portion of proceeds” can be extremely minimal, sometimes pennies to the dollar. Meanwhile, retailers are boosting their image by purporting to care about breast cancer and doing little to contribute to its…

While the US is divided on how to get it done, polls show that we all agree the healthcare system needs a fixin'.
Health insurance is a multi-billion dollar industry, while almost 50 million Americans remain uninsured, and even more are underinsured. The CEOs of these companies are making $3 Million salaries (see
Forbes 2009 CEO Compensation list),…

One of the best parts of this position is meeting and working with amazing and inspiring individuals. I recently had the pleasure of talking to Antonio Sausys, who is a cancer advocate and yoga instructor in Marin County, California. He teaches a regular class to cancer patients and survivors, and has been touched by cancer in many ways. I wanted to share some of his wisdom with the Yoga Bear community:
How did you get into teaching yoga to the cancer community?
My Dad…

You may have had a hunch that laying in a capsule emitting ultraviolet radiation wasn't exactly good for you. But now we have the data to prove it. Millions of tanners, many of them teenagers in the US, will be shocked to find the strong link between tanning beds and cancer.
The World Health Organization’s
International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) announced that it has moved UV tanning beds to its highest cancer risk category…

Who doesn't want to have great posture? Standing tall makes you look taller and more confident. But unfortunately many of us have lousy posture (probably from sitting in front of a computer all day).
I've been focusing my practice on a few poses that are supposed to counteract the tendency to slouch. My favorite of these poses is "half wheel" or "Setu Bandha Sarvangasana". Not only is this a great heart and chest opener, but it's a…

I wouldn't buy a $100 mat during an economic boom, let alone the current recession.
But Time reports that sales of designer mats, which are in the ballpark of $100, are surging. One leading company, Manduka, has seen sales increase 87% on Amazon in the last 4 months. It's now teaming up with the national Dick's chain to take advantage.
What gives? Yes, the mats are good quality and offer traction and joint support. But a series of other factors are at play. More stressed…

The answer is NO. But one $47 million dollar for-profit company, Myriad Genetic, has put a patent on two human genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2. You may know of these genes as the Breast Cancer Genes.
Myriad's patents give it the exclusive rights to all testing and research on the BRCA genes. Women who can't afford the $3,000+ cost can't get tested; women seeking second opinions can't get them; and women of African, Hispanic, or Asian decent are at a significant disadvantage because they…

This is a bit off topic from our usual yoga and healing focus. But I can't resist sharing, as this is one of the most moving commencement addresses I've ever heard (err-read).
Commencement Address to the Class of 2009
University of Portland, May 3rd, 2009
Paul Hawken
When I was invited to give this speech, I was asked if I could give a simple short talk that was “direct, naked, taut, honest, passionate, lean, shivering, startling, and graceful.” Boy, no…
