Is "Chemo Brain" A Disability Under the Americans With Disabilities Act?

See my article in today's Huffington Post on this topic. I interviewed Joanna Morales who is an attorney and the director of the Cancer Legal Resource Center. She provided some great information about workplace protections available to people who have been through chemotherapy and now have issues with memory and concentration, etc.

All the best to everyone!

Hi Jean,

Yes, it's quite real and there's plenty of research now documenting it. In fact, my co-author Dr. Dan Silverman at UCLA (we wrote the book, "Your Brain After Chemo: A Practical Guide to Lifting the Fog and Getting Back Your Focus") was one of the first neuroscientists to use brain imaging to document the link between chemo and cognitive impairment.

I went through it myself for about one year after treatment but I'm much better now.

It's just recently that "Chemo Brain" has been excepted as a 'real' side effect, though those of us who experienced it know that it is real. Thanks for adding the blog!

Thank you, Idelle. This is really interesting, and I'm going to share w/ my local survivors group!

Hi Regina,

Yes, if you can show with doctors' notes, etc., that you are no longer able to function on the job the way you did prior to treatment and that reasonable accommodations would help. Attorney Morales did a great job explaining all this. Just click on this link and it will take you to the full interview. Thanks!

So what's the verdict? Is it considered a disability?
